Profile Description

We’re seeking someone to join our team as (Associate) Mainframe Infrastructure Metrics Engineer who will be responsible for ensuring the capacity planning, performance reporting, and efficiency of our mainframe systems. You will use your expertise in capacity planning, performance optimization and data analysis to ensure our mainframe infrastructure operates efficiently and effectively identifying both capacity and performance exceptions.  

Enterprise_Technology

Enterprise Technology & Services (ETS) delivers shared technology services for Morgan Stanley supporting all business applications and end users. ETS provides capabilities for all stages of Morgan Stanley’s software development lifecycle, enabling productive coding, functional and integration testing, application releases, and ongoing monitoring and support for over 3,000 production applications. ETS also delivers all workplace technologies (desktop, mobile, voice, video, productivity, intranet/internet) in integrated configurations that boost the personal productivity of employees. Application and end user functions are delivered on a scalable, secure, and reliable infrastructure composed of seamlessly integrated datacenter, network, compute, cloud, storage, and database functions.

Mainframe Computing (MC)

Mainframe Computing Provides mainframe computing systems that offer the highest level of resiliency, security, data reliability, and operational risk reduction for financial transactional processing delivered via innovative operational practices and modern technical solutions.

Data & Analytics Engineering

This is Associate position that provides specialist data analysis and expertise that drive decision-making and business insights as well as crafting data pipelines, implementing data models,  optimizing data processes for improved data accuracy and accessibility, including applying machine learning and AI-based techniques

What you’ll do in the role:

  • Capacity Planning, Performance Monitoring and Analysis:

  • Monitor mainframe performance metrics using various Tools such as RMF, SmartIS, iZPCA, MICs and other internal tools.

  • Analyze performance data to identify trends, bottlenecks, and potential issues.

  • Model mainframe workloads & forecast future resource utilization to support capacity planning.

  • Resource Optimization and utilization Management

  • Develop and implement performance tuning strategies to optimize system performance.

  • Data Analysis:

  • Collect and analyze system performance data to generate reports and dashboards.

  • Identify key performance indicators (KPIs) and develop metrics to track system performance.

  • Summarize and present data findings, recommendations, and methodology to senior leadership, department leadership and enterprise stakeholders (technical and non-technical stakeholders)

  • Collaboration and Communication:  

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including operations, development, and infrastructure teams.

  • Provide technical support and guidance to team members and stakeholders.

  • Participate in on-call rotations and provide timely responses to performance and observability issues.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • At least 4+ years' relevant experience would generally be expected to find the skills required for this role.

  • Bachelor’s degree in information systems, Mathematics, Finance or another quantitative or related subject

  • 4+ years of experience as a mainframe Systems Engineer with proficiency in performance management for large, multi-processor, multi-LPAR, Parallel Sysplex environments utilizing z/OS.

  • Proven experience in mainframe performance monitoring, observability, capacity management, and data analysis.

  • Proficiency in Cobol, Job Control Language (JCL) & DB2

  • Strong understanding of Batch Processing and Job Scheduling

  • Advanced user of MS Excel (Charts, Pivot tables, VLOOKUP’s, PowerPivot) and PowerPoint

  • Experience with mainframe monitoring tools and performance tuning techniques.

  • Experience working with large highly transactional datasets to draw insights and create organizational value.

  • Python experience is a huge plus.

  • WLM Experience is a huge plus.

  • Data integration experience is a plus.

  • REXX and/or Java experience on the mainframe is a plus.

  • Experience with DevOps is a plus.

  • Experience working with ADABAS is a plus.

Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and strategic thinking skills including the ability to prioritize.

  • Proficiency in data analysis and creation of dashboards and various visualizations that will provide actionable insights for operations, engineering and management decision making.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office suite for management reporting using both PowerPoint and Excel analytical functions

  • Comfortable taking information from disparate systems to bring data elements together for meaningful insights.

  • Analyze and solve business problems at their root, stepping back to understand the broader context.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

  • MICS Product & Reporting experience (huge plus)

  • IBM SCRT Reporting (plus)

  • iZPCA Product experience (plus)

  • Exhibit good time management skills, independent thinking, and decision-making capabilities.

  • High sense of urgency and ability to prioritize competing requirements in a fast-paced environment.
