Firm Risk Management (FRM) supports Morgan Stanley to achieve its business goals by partnering with business units across the Firm to realize efficient risk-adjusted returns, acting as a strategic advisor to the Board and protecting the Firm from exposure to losses as a result of credit, market, liquidity, model and other risks.

Department Profile

Market Risk Department (“MRD”) is responsible for the governance and oversight of all market risk exposures arising from the Firm’s business activities by identifying and defining market risks, developing and employing risk measures and tools to monitor and control those risks, establishing limits, monitoring usage against these limits, and producing and distributing comprehensive reports designed to keep senior management apprised of the Firm’s market risk exposures

Background on the Position: Morgan Stanley is seeking a highly motivated and team-oriented individual to join the recently formed Contingent Market Risk team within its Market Risk Department (“MRD”) in New York. This role provides a unique opportunity to work at the intersection between market risk and credit risk with a focus on identifying and analyzing the market risk positions of the Firm’s clients. This role also offers the opportunity to actively develop a new risk discipline and work across the full range of Fixed Income securities.
In this role you will:

- Analyze market risk exposures at counterparty level, including the identification of top concentrations. Maintain ongoing dialogue with front office regarding client concentrations and risk exposures

- Perform regular deep dives on topical products and clients.

- Collaborate closely with colleagues both within the Market Risk Department as well as in the Credit Risk Department in addition to other support groups, including Finance, Strats and Technology

- Improve existing and create new processes to monitor contingent market risks and develop new stress testing methodologies

- Create presentations articulating key risks and portfolio changes to senior management in a timely fashion.

- Develop limit framework for contingent market risk and embed within firm’s risk appetite

- Lead projects to create / enhance the tools and processes needed to support the contingent market risk function, in collaboration with Technology teams within MRD and in the Front Office

Required Experience
In order to succeed in this role, you will ideally have:

- Curiosity and self-motivation to develop expertise in financial products, markets, and risk management practices

- An entrepreneurial mindset and the motivation to develop risk processes and frameworks from scratch

- Educational background in finance, economics, engineering, mathematics, or science

- 3 years or more of work experience in the financial services industry (particularly risk management, finance, sales and trading or banking)

- Knowledge of market risk and or counterparty credit risk concepts such as stress scenario analysis, risk measures, PE95, collateral agreements
- Product knowledge in Fixed Income and/or Equity products, including derivatives. Rates / FX preferred.

- Hands-on experience analyzing large data sets using tools such as Excel or SQL and Python coding

- Independent mindset and ability to challenge people and established processes

- Excellent communication skills for written, graphical and verbal presentation

- Attention to detail, project management and prioritization skills will also be key in balancing daily deadlines with timely implementation of strategic projects
